Balkan Trip – Part 1: From Germany to Slovenia and to the Bosnian border

After many weekends of screwing and finishing the camper – whereby “finished” here means that it is still constantly dripping from the waste water tank – the time has finally come and we set off on our camper’s maiden voyage. Apart from a few weekend trips in Germany, this is the first longer tour with this hellish vehicle and we are excited to see what will break. In fact, we already noticed on the first few kilometers that the drawers in the kitchen, when fully loaded, don’t stay in place. That’s not something that couldn’t be fixed temporarily with a bit of gaffer tape (although of course nothing lasts as long as a makeshift solution…) However, the fact that the charging booster of the supply battery falls out of its holder and that the hot exhaust air from the cool box heats the drawer surrounding it, including the chocolate stored in it, to a good 40 °C are more of a problem. But it doesn’t help, it has to do for now…

Despite these circumstances, we make good time through Austria and cross the Karawanken Pass behind Villach. We camp overnight in the small village of Bohinjska Bistrica in the Triglav National Park and are rewarded for our hard driving with a magnificent view of the Julian Alps in the evening light, a walk through the cute village and two wonderful Strudel.
