Literally dewy-eyed, we set off and leave the Una National Park with a longing look back and set off on the six-hour drive through the Bosnian province to Sarajevo, where we arrive in the early evening after brief stops in Jajce and Travnik. Even from a distance, it is clear that Sarajevo, unlike most of the country, is a modern city. The villages follow each other more densely and merge into suburban settlements and prefabricated housing estates. Before reaching the city center, however, we turn right to the south and drive high above the city to the northern edge of the Trebević Mountains, where the 1984 Winter Olympics were held. Here, with a bit of luck, we find the last pitch on the only campsite around Sarajevo, from where we enjoy a great view of the city center a hundred meters below and where we will spend the next two nights. To round off an exhausting day’s travel, we take a cab to the old town and spend the evening there before heading back to “our” mountain full of expectations.
