On day 56, at the end of the second month of the Great Journey, we visit Limassol. The city surprises us with its mixture of tradition and modernity. In the first row, magnificent glass skyscrapers stand side by side. They block the view of the sea from the old town houses behind them and are separated from the city only by a large, modern promenade with lots of greenery and sports and skate parks. All of Limassol strolls here, even those who don’t live in the first row, but in the two- to three-storey houses of the city proper. Here, the city doesn’t seem to have grown out of a larger plan. Winding alleys crisscross the rows of houses, cafes and small shops line the rows of stores in the old town, which still shows the city’s Turkish heritage, even if hardly any Turks live here today, but Cypriots and tourists from all over the world. We end the evening at the beautiful old harbor and drive to the Troodos Mountains where we camp above a reservoir.
