Balkan Trip – Part 3: Una National Park

After three long days of travel with many hundreds of kilometers behind us, we are happy to have finally arrived at the first destination of our trip: Bosnia and Herzegovina. We deliberately started our vacation somewhat without a plan and so we ended up in the Una National Park rather by chance, as we wanted to make a stop in the northwest of Bosnia before continuing on to the heartland and Sarajevo.

Named after the mountain river that flows through it, the Una, the park in the mountainous border region between Croatia and Bosnia surprises us with its lush green high mountains, deep gorges criss-crossed by the arms of the Una and hundreds of smaller and larger waterfalls. The highest of these can be admired in Martin Brod, where we set off early in the morning. From there, we also go on a four-hour hike up the Una, past collapsed bridges and abandoned railroad tracks and then up the gorge wall for about 320 meters and along the ridge northwest back to Martin Brod (view on Komoot).

After a well-earned coffee in the village, we drive a few minutes to a picnic and camping site where we actually just want to cool off in the Una, which feels 4 °C cold. But then we like it here so much (and the hot solar showers do their bit to convince us….) that we spontaneously decide to spend the night here. A hot afternoon is now followed by a golden sunset over the Una waterfalls and a cold night under a wide, starry sky.
