Balkan Trip – Part 10: From Montenegro via Sarajevo and back Home

Ostrog Monastery, Puppy Rescue and Sarajevo

Our journey continues towards home, but on the way we visit the Ostrog Monastery very close to our campsite. The monastery was carved into the slope of the Prekornica Mountains in the mid-17th century and is considered an important pilgrimage site by Serbian Orthodox Christians due to the remains of St. Vasijle that are kept there.

With one last magnificent view of the Zeta plain, we continue northwest and back towards Bosnia. Unfortunately, the weather is not very kind to us and we cross the mighty Tara Gorge in the pouring rain, so that we can only enjoy within our car.

The next morning we drive on towards Sarajevo. From now on, our vacation turns out to be completely different from what we had planned, as a puppy runs in front of our car halfway there. Before I know it, Svenja’s instincts kick in and we are on our way to the nearest vet in Sarajevo with a tiny, soaking wet and very confused puppy. We spend the next few days in Sarajevo trying to find a shelter for him. As expected, however, this turns out to be quite difficult, as most of the animal shelters here are so-called killing shelters (…). Fortunately, the only live animal shelter in Sarajevo is able to take him in after all, so that we can leave Sarajevo after a few days with mixed feelings…

Back home with a stop at Balaton Lake

Th next morning, we pack up, hand over little Pauchi (he was name very quickly…) to a contact person at the animal shelter and we start the first leg of our journey home: We head north-west through northern Bosnia, Croatia and the Hungarian province to Lake Balaton, where we arrive in the early evening and spend a quiet evening. In perfect weather, we treat ourselves to one last day of vacation at Lake Balaton and relax with a swim in a thermal lake, a good lunch and a short hike through the vineyards. A successful end to a very eventful vacation.
