TGJ Entry 56: The Astonishing Ancient Armenian Ruins of Ani

Crossing the border into Turkey is straightforward, and we pitch our tents on a small peninsula in a lake near the border. From here, we enjoy a wonderful view of the Armenian Highlands. The next day, we drive past Kars to the ruins of the ancient Armenian settlement of Ani, which is located right on the border with modern-day Armenia. The sun sets earlier now, and we enjoy a few wonderful golden hours in the late afternoon. Afterwards, we drive on for a few hours and reach biblical Mount Ararat after sunset. However, we wouldn’t be able to see it until the next morning, when it greeted us with an amazing sunrise, painting the tip of Turkey’s highest mountain red and gold.
