It was time again for another pet rescue operation… On day 58 of the trip, Easter Sunday, a beautiful and (still) well-fed dog runs up to our camper at a beautiful campsite near Limassol, close to the archaeological site of Kourion. Already during the night he had taken a yoga mat and a towel from outside our camper and brought them to his sleeping place to make it a bit more comfortable… This purebred dog does not fit the image of a street dog that we might have in Germany and that Apollo would have become in Bosnia. We learn that there is a lot of hunting in Cyprus and that hunting dogs are bred accordingly. If they don’t “perform” at the age of two or three because, like this little rascal, they are too trusting, not obedient enough or simply don’t have a strong hunting instinct, they are simply abandoned. It’s absolutely disgusting…
The little one, who we named Dobby because of his ears, is extremely trusting and gets along wonderfully with Apollo. However, he has a few wounds that haven’t healed well and probably wouldn’t do well on the street because he simply didn’t grow up there. But because we can’t take him to a shelter on an Easter Sunday anyway, we’ll just add him to our “pack” for the day (Apollo loves it!). We then take him to a great animal shelter in Paphos on Monday. Here he will first receive medical treatment and then, if the owner doesn’t get in touch (lol…), he will be rehomed. We are doing our best to support the shelter in finding a new home for him. Although we only had a little more than a day with him, it’s hard for us to say goodbye, also because we know that he won’t have a particularly good time for the time being, even though the people at the shelter are of course doing their best!
On Monday, we’ll take a break from all the excitement and spend the next day exploring the charming old town of Paphos.
