After spending one night in the mountains near Mersin, we drive all the way through the Taurus Mountains to Central Cappadocia, one of the highlights of our trip to Turkey. Over the next few days, we take things slowly and explore the region around the small village of Göreme from various parking spots. Unfortunately, we caught flu (or possibly Covid), so we aren’t able to be as active as we would have liked, but Cappadocia can also be enjoyed from the comfort of our camper. As well as Göreme, we visit Ortahisar and Uçhisar, and we stay for two nights in the Zemi Valley. One morning, we get up early to see the famous hot air balloons rising over the Cappadocian landscape with its characteristic ‘fairy chimneys’, which are geological features left behind by the erosion of tuff deposited by the nearby Erciyes Dağı volcano over millions of years.
